Blog: Why Am I Doing All the Things but Still Not Getting Clients? - Image of lady looking at laptop, head in hands

Have you ever found yourself saying...

"I'm posting on social media."

"I've got a website."

"I'm networking."

"I've claimed my Google Business Profile."

"I've even tried blogging."

And yet...

The enquiries still aren't coming in consistently.

If that sounds familiar, you're not alone. In fact, this is one of the most common frustrations I hear from small business owners.

They're busy. They're working hard. They're trying lots of different marketing activities.

But despite all that effort, they're not seeing the results they hoped for.

So what's going on?

The Problem Isn't Usually Your Service

Most of the business owners I work with are good at what they do. They care about their customers. They have happy clients. Many have been in business for several years.

The problem usually isn't the quality of their service.

It's what happens (or doesn't) behind the scenes.

You're Doing Marketing, But Is It Working Together?

One of the biggest mistakes I see is treating marketing activities as separate tasks.

  • Your website here
  • Your Facebook page is there
  • Your Google Business Profile that's been claimed but not updated in months
  • Your email list that hasn't received a newsletter for six months
  • A blog post written two years ago

Individually, none of these things is necessarily wrong. The challenge is that they're often not connected.

Marketing works best when the different pieces support each other.

  • Your website should support your social media
  • Your social media should drive people to your website
  • Your Google Business Profile should help people discover your business
  • Your email marketing should help nurture relationships and encourage repeat business

When these pieces aren't working together, it can feel like you're putting in lots of effort without getting much back.

You're Relying Too Heavily on Word of Mouth

Word of mouth is wonderful. In fact, some of my best clients have come through recommendations. But relying solely on word of mouth can be risky.

  • What happens when referrals slow down?
  • What happens if one of your biggest referral sources changes direction?
  • What happens during quieter periods?

Many business owners don't start thinking about marketing until enquiries drop. By then, they're often in panic mode.

The businesses that grow steadily usually have a few simple systems working alongside referrals.

That way, they're not relying on one source of enquiries.

You're Focusing on Activities Instead of Outcomes

Another trap I see business owners fall into is measuring activity instead of results.

For example:

  • Posting on social media every day
  • Creating endless Canva graphics
  • Joining networking groups
  • Trying the latest marketing trend

These activities might make you feel productive. But are they actually helping people find you? Are they generating enquiries? Are they leading to sales?

Not all marketing activities are equal. Some will have a much bigger impact on your business than others.

The challenge is knowing which ones deserve your attention.

Your Website Might Be Holding You Back

Sometimes the issue isn't visibility. Sometimes people find your website but don't take action. Perhaps it's unclear what you offer. Perhaps there's no obvious next step. Perhaps visitors can't quickly understand how you can help them.

If you're wondering whether your website could be working harder for your business, you might find these blog posts helpful:

You're Trying to Do Everything at Once

There are more marketing opportunities available today than ever before.

  • Social media
  • Blogging
  • Email marketing
  • SEO
  • Google Business Profiles
  • Networking
  • Video
  • Podcasts
  • Advertising
  • AI

It's no wonder many business owners feel overwhelmed!

The truth is, you don't need to do everything.

You need to focus on the activities most likely to help your business right now. Trying to do everything often results in doing nothing particularly well.

So What Should You Do Instead?

Start by asking yourself three simple questions:

  1. How are most people currently finding me?
  2. Where am I getting enquiries from?
  3. What's the next logical improvement I could make?

For some businesses, that might be improving their website.

For others, it might be optimising their Google Business Profile.

For others, it could be starting an email list or writing helpful blog content.

The answer will be different for every business. That's why copying somebody else's marketing strategy rarely works

You Don't Need More Marketing. You Need The Right Marketing.

The goal isn't to be everywhere.

The goal is to be visible in the places that matter most to your ideal customers.

When you understand what's working, what's missing, and where your biggest opportunities lie, marketing becomes much less overwhelming.

Instead of guessing what to do next, you have a plan.

Ready to Stop Guessing?

If you've been trying lots of different marketing activities but still aren't getting the enquiries you'd like, don't beat yourself up.

Most small business owners don't need another marketing tactic. They need to understand what's working, what's missing, and where to focus their efforts next.

Sometimes, a few small changes can make a bigger difference than months of trying random marketing activities.

That's exactly what my ALIGN Roadmap Session is designed to help with.

Together, we'll look at your website, visibility, marketing activity, customer journey and systems to identify the opportunities that could have the biggest impact on your business.

You'll leave with practical recommendations, a clear action plan, and confidence about what to focus on next.
