Blog - How to write email subject lines that deman attention - image of blank email with Subject lines matter written on Subject line

Writing the perfect email subject line is an art form that requires creativity, precision, and a deep understanding of your audience.

The right subject line can be the difference between an opened email and one that’s lost in the abyss of the inbox.

In this blog, I'm going to share some effective strategies for writing email subject lines that not only capture attention but also encourage readers to click.

1. Personalise Where Possible

Nothing grabs attention like seeing your own name or a personal detail in your inbox. Personalisation can significantly increase open rates. Use your recipient's name, location, or other personal data to make your emails feel more tailored and less generic.

  • "Sarah, Check Out These Exclusive Offers Just for You!"
  • "Ready for the Big Game, London? Here’s What You Need to Know!"

2. Pique Their Curiosity

A little mystery goes a long way. Subject lines that spark curiosity can lead to higher open rates because people naturally want to find out more. Create intrigue without giving too much away, encouraging your recipients to open the email to learn more. But be careful not to veer into clickbait territory; make sure your email delivers on the promises your subject line makes.

  • "You Won’t Believe This Incredible Deal!"
  • "Guess What’s Coming Back in Stock Soon?"

3. Highlight The Benefits

People want to know what’s in it for them. Use your subject line to clearly state the benefit of opening the email. Whether it’s a solution to a problem or a promise of valuable information, let your audience know they’ll gain something by reading further.

4. Create Urgency and Scarcity

Incorporating a sense of urgency or scarcity can encourage recipients to act quickly. Phrases like "limited time offer" or "only a few left" create a fear of missing out, which can increase open rates. FOMO is real!

  • "Last Chance to Grab Your Early Bird Discount!"

5. Ask Questions

Questions engage the mind and will often prompt an internal response. Use them to make the reader feel involved immediately. Ensure the question relates directly to their interests or challenges to grab their attention.

    6. Use Numbers and Lists

Numbers stand out in a sea of text and signal a quick, easy read. Subject lines that include numbers or imply a list can draw readers in, promising a concise, informative experience.

      7. Inject Humour and Fun

If it’s appropriate for your brand, humorous subject lines can be very effective. They set a light-hearted tone and make your emails stand out. However, what’s funny to one person might not be to another, so know your audience well.

      8. Tell a Story

Starting a story in your subject line can be incredibly effective at drawing readers in. People are naturally inclined to find out what happens next. Tease a narrative they’ll want to follow up on.

      • "The Day I Almost Gave Up..."
      • "Our Founder’s Biggest Mistake and What It Taught Us"

      9. Announce Exciting News

If you have something new and exciting to share, let your subject line reflect that excitement. Updates, launches, or new features are all great fodder for engaging subject lines.

        • "Introducing Our Latest Product Feature!"
        • "Big News: We’re Expanding to New Locations!"

        10. Keep It Direct

Sometimes, simplicity is key. Not every email subject line needs flair - clear and straightforward can be just as effective, especially if your audience prefers a more direct approach.
