Boosting your email open rate - Blog - Image of a hand holding mobile with email icon above it

Recently, one of my clients, Jo, sent me a concerned message which filled me with dread... "My latest newsletter hasn't reached anyone!" she said. My heart sank for a moment - had I forgotten to press 'Send' after drafting her email? Doubt and a tiny seed of panic started to set in!

The Detective Work Begins

Determined to uncover the truth, I logged in to check her email statistics. To my relief, the newsletter had indeed been sent out, and not just sent, but delivered to her entire mailing list. But why then, did Jo feel like it hadn't reached anyone?

As I dug deeper into the data, the numbers began to tell their story. Out of the recipients, 45% had opened the email - a figure well above the average industry open rate. Yet, there were no click-throughs, no replies and no signs that the content within had sparked any action.

Understanding the Real Issue

Unfortunately, this situation presents an all-too-common scenario in the world of email marketing. It wasn’t that the emails weren’t reaching their intended audience; it was that the audience wasn’t engaging with them. In this case, it wasn’t a problem with technology but with the challenge of capturing her audience’s attention in a world drowning in information.

Reframing the Strategy

This revelation was a turning point, not just for Jo but for any small business owner struggling with similar issues. It becomes clear that the focus needs to shift from not just sending emails, but to making those emails count.

Writing Emails That Connect

1. Segment Your Audience

Tailor your emails to match the interests and needs of different segments of your audience. Personalisation goes beyond just inserting a name in the greeting; it’s about writing content that resonates with the specific needs and desires of your audience.

2. Write Engaging Subject Lines

Your subject line is your first, and often only, chance to grab attention. Make it intriguing, clear, and relevant. Experiment with questions, teasers, or personal touches that speak directly to your reader.  You may find this blog post helpful too "How to write email subject lines that demand attention"

3. Time Your Emails Right

Through trial and error, find the sweet spot for when your audience is most likely to open and read your emails. Each audience is unique, so use the analytics tools at your disposal to discover the optimal times for engagement.

4. Engage with a Clear Call to Action

Every email should have a purpose. Decide what action you want your readers to take, and write a clear, interesting call to action that guides them towards that goal.

5. Keep the Conversation Going

Encourage replies by asking questions or inviting feedback. An engaged subscriber is more likely to become an active participant in your business’s story. And it helps with your email deliverability

Final Thoughts

As Jo gears up to write her next newsletter, we're taking all we've learned and putting it into action. This is an exciting time, as each step we take brings us closer to truly engaging with our audience. Understanding that successful email marketing is about more than just reaching inboxes - it’s about creating content that resonates personally - has been a game changer.

Like everything in business, it's about continually checking what is working and what isn't and making small tweaks accordingly. Every newsletter is a fresh chance to connect more deeply and see what works best.

So, as you plan your own email campaigns, remember that the key to success lies in making real connections. It's all about writing messages that not only arrive but also make a meaningful impact.
