5 Ways to Manage Your Website Like a Physical Store - Image of a florist shop front with a variety of different flowers in tubs and baskets

This week I went to see a potential new client about updating and maintaining their website.  Whilst I was driving there I stopped at traffic lights by a little florist,  they had a gorgeous window display of autumn-themed orange flowers and pumpkins and I got to thinking (I know dangerous right!)

Running a website can feel like an overwhelming task, especially if you’re not particularly tech-savvy. But what if you think of your website as an online version of a physical store? Suddenly, the process of maintaining your website becomes a lot more familiar and manageable

Just like a physical shop, your website needs to be organised, welcoming and regularly refreshed to attract and engage customers.

Here are five simple ways to manage your website like a physical store.

1. Change Your Window Display (Update Your Homepage Regularly)

In a physical shop, changing your window display is key to drawing in new customers and keeping things fresh for regulars. The same applies to your website’s homepage—it’s your virtual shopfront!

Regularly updating it with new content, promotions, or products keeps your site looking fresh and relevant, encouraging visitors to return and explore what’s new.

Whether it’s a seasonal promotion or a new product launch, make sure your homepage showcases the most important things your visitors need to know about right now.

2. Keep the Aisles Clear (Ensure Easy Navigation)

Imagine walking into a shop where you can’t easily find what you’re looking for - (I'm thinking TK Maxx - eek!) Frustrating, right? The same principle applies to your website. Navigating your website should be simple and intuitive, allowing visitors to find what they need without getting lost.

Use clear menus, well-organised categories, and easy-to-spot links to ensure your site is as user-friendly as possible. Remember, the easier it is for visitors to find information or products, the more likely they are to stick around.

Ask someone who isn't part of your business to check out your website and ask them how easy it is to find information.  A fresh pair of eyes can be so helpful. If you want me to look at your website to give you some pointers, just ask.

3. Offer a Friendly Greeting (Engage with a Welcome Message or Pop-up)

When you walk into a physical stop, a warm greeting from a shop assistant makes you feel welcomed and valued. Your website can do the same with a friendly pop-up or message for first-time visitors.

This could be a special discount, a free resource that they will find useful (and allows you to grow your email list!), or simply an offer to help with any questions they may have.

A small gesture like this makes your website visitors feel appreciated and more likely to explore further.

4. Organise Your Shelves (Keep Content Organised and Clear)

Just like a well-stocked shop with neatly organised shelves, your website should be clean, clear, and easy to navigate. Ensure that your key products, services, or information are displayed prominently and that your content is organised in a way that’s easy for your visitors to understand.

If your site feels cluttered or confusing, visitors may leave before they find what they’re looking for. An organised website not only looks professional but helps guide your visitors towards taking action—whether that’s making a purchase or getting in touch.

5. Host Special In-Store Events (Run Online Promotions and Events)

Physical shops often run special promotions, sales, or events to attract customers and drive traffic. Your website can do the same! At the time of writing this post, Matalan are having a £5 & Under Baby Event and this is shown on their home page as you can see in the image.

Whether it’s a seasonal sale, a webinar, or an exclusive online event, hosting promotions or offering something special is a great way to engage your audience and encourage them to return.

By creating a sense of excitement and urgency around these events, you can draw in new visitors and reward loyal customers.

In Summary: Keep It Simple, Clear, and Welcoming

Managing your website can be simple if you think of it like running a physical shop. Keeping things organised, fresh, and customer-friendly will help you grow your business online—without the tech overwhelm.

Whether it’s updating your homepage regularly or running special promotions, small, manageable steps can make all the difference.
